There are many ways in which soft landscaping can enhance and improve a garden, be it large or small, and there are thousands of different plants to choose from to do this - selecting the right ones is a fundamental part of creating a great garden that meets the needs of the client.
Plants are constantly evolving - producing flowers, fruit and seeds and changing shape and colour as they do so. When different combinations of trees, shrubs and perennials are grown together they create new structures and a change of character within their surrounding landscape throughout the year. They are at the heart of any garden, providing texture and movement, colour and scent. They inject life into it.
Plants also serve many purposes other than their immediate appearance within the garden. They can frame a particular view or sculpture, turn an overlooked area into an intimate seating corner, disguise an unsighlty wall or encourage and sustain wildlife habitats.
While hard landscaping can often be the integral part of a garden by providing the structure and layout of many of the functional areas, the inclusion of planting both enhances and softens the spaces and materials used. A few well chosen plants can transform an expanse of wall or help bring out the tones in some natural stone paving.
