This small courtyard garden in the city centre was uneven, unsightly and unusable. Providing 4 basic concept plans of the layout and materials, the client chose a mix of two.
A contemporary design was used to suit the new building work on the house, with planting that would manage itself when the client was away. Key features for the client were somewhere to sit and enjoy the sunshine, and storage for a bike.
Courtyard looks very small & narrow
Hidden storage provided at the end of the garden
Over a year on, planting has matured well
My client's garden surrounds their house on 3 sides, this area joining the front and back gardens is partly used for utilities but it also viewed from a kitchen window and the conservatory. It was dominated by a large shrub taking lots of light from the house, the sleepers were rotten and slippery and the fence was old and unsightly. The client wanted something lively and interesting with space for growing a small amount of veg in the future.
Dominated by large Garrya

I used a mix of shrubs and bright perennials that would provide interest year-round through texture and colour, and the new contemporary fencing lends itself well to lush planting, which will fill out nicely as the plants mature.
Planting is becoming established
My client had recently built a modern extension to their second home and required some planting for the new raised beds surroundiing the terrace. Easy maintenance was paramount, and something that would look good year round.
10 months on the plants are filling out
The terrace is looking great
A few years on, the terrace planting is fully established
